Introduction and Background

Fisheries and Aquaculture contributes 60% of animal protein use by Ghanaians. This is especially encouraging giving the health advantages of fish and sea foods as protein sources over other animal products. It is reported1 that “the fisheries sub-sector is expected to contribute to the attainment of the country’s food security goals by providing the bulk of low cost but high quality animal protein in the daily diet of many households”. These notwithstanding the great investment potentials of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors have not been harnessed. In fact they have been neglected, marginalised and minimised for a long time.
